Te Whatu Ora has put out a notice to ban the towing of 23 large mobile dental clinic trailers.

This follows wheels snapping off two trailers, but hospitals continuing to move them between schools.

The five-tonne trailers look like a large caravan.

The notice out Tuesday tells district hospitals not to tow them, effective immediately, until they have had their wheels replaced.

They could still be moved around on the back of a truck, or be used if they stayed put, it said.

The problem has been restricting dental care to children in the Rotorua Lakes district, Te Whatu Ora said.

The Transport Agency has not put any bar on the trailers and has not known if they were being moved around or not.
