A manhunt in Indonesia's West Papua is underway after more than 250 inmates escaped a prison during violent riots.

The mass prison break happened on Monday in Sorong, as thousands of Papuans marched in several cities across the territory.

The demonstrations were sparked over the weekend by a racist mob which harassed Papuan students, some of whom were later arrested.

AFP reported justice ministry spokesperson Marlien Lande saying 258 inmates fled their cells when the prison was set ablaze by protesters.

Several prison employees who tried to stop the escape were injured by prisoners throwing rocks, Ms Lande said.
