Top NZ diplomat Terence O'Brien dies

Former diplomat Terence O'Brien has died aged 86 in Wellington.

O'Brien was New Zealand's ambassador to the United Nations between 1990 and 1993, and was President of the UN Security Council for a period.

Earlier he was Ambassador to the European Community in Brussels where he helped negotiate trade deals following Britain's decision to join the EEC.

After leaving the diplomatic corps, he was founding director of the New Zealand Centre for Strategic Studies, and a frequent commentator on foreign affairs.
