Mother uncovers more details of son's final movements

18:48 pm on 4 January 2012

The mother of a man who died mysteriously in Coromandel a year ago says she has uncovered more information about where her son was last seen alive.

The body of 19-year-old Cem Erbay was discovered near Duck Pond Reserve in Matarangi on 3 January 2011.

Sharon Harvey posted fliers around Coromandel hoping to jog someone's memory and returned to Duck Pond Reserve on New Year's Day 2012 to appeal for more information.

She says a bach owner told her he spotted Mr Erbay near Harbour Drive, adding weight to other sightings that placed him in the harbour and golf links area of north Matarangi, in the harbour and golf links area.

These sightings where initially discounted.

Dr Harvey says this suggests more people probably encountered her son.

Dr Harvey says the inquest into her son's death has been adjourned, giving her until the end of February to gather further information on how he died.

Police have concluded Mr Erbay fell to his death from a bluff but Dr Harvey says eyewitness accounts of her son's movements contradict that.
