Man charged over New Lynn shooting

17:27 pm on 26 July 2008

Police investigating the armed robbery and shooting of a West Auckland dairy owner have charged a man.

Dairy owner Xu Mei Ying, 46, was working in her New Lynn store on Saturday night when she was held up by an armed man.

She was reaching for a panic button when she was shot with what has now been confirmed as an air rifle. A pellet lodged under her arm, requiring surgery.

Detective Steve Norris says police arrested an 18-year-old man in the early hours of Monday morning and charged him with assault with intent to rob, aggravated wounding and firearms counts.

"We had a pretty quick response and it's resulted in the very early resolution. We had a number of calls, all nominating the same person."

The man is due to appear in court on Monday.
