Two people have died and another person is in critical condition in hospital after a car crashed into a power pole in Henderson.
Police said officers saw a car travelling speeding on Henderson Valley Road at 12.38am, and did a U-turn but did not activate lights and sirens.
Detective Inspector Kevin McNaughton from the Waitematā CIB said the vehicle continued along Henderson Valley Road at speed, some distance from the officers.
Police found the vehicle, which appeared to have its lights turned off, crashed into a power pole further along Henderson Valley Road, he said.
The officers attempted to provide first aid but two people died at the scene.
Another person is in a critical condition and one person is in a stable condition in hospital.
Henderson Valley Road remains closed due to damaged powerlines.
A scene examination has been carried out with the Serious Crash Unit at the site, and the IPCA has been notified.
