Vanuatu speaker's post at centre of parliamentary vote

13:16 pm on 8 December 2009

The Vanuatu parliament is scheduled to elect a new speaker this afternoon following a motion last week aimed at ousting the current speaker, Maxime Carlot Korman.

This comes amid a political stand-off which has included the speaker's unsuccessful attempt to remove the prime minister, Edward Natapei, after Mr Natapei tried to him as part of a comprehensive cabinet reshuffle.

Under the new coalition agreement, the position of the speaker has been allocated to Georges Wells from the Alliance.

Mr Natapei says Mr Carlot Korman is aware that the government will put a motion against him if he does not resign.

Parliament is this week also due to vote on a no confidence motion in the prime minister.
