A central Wellington primary school has asked students not to come in to classes on Thursday because there are not enough teachers to look after them.

Mt Cook School on Tory Street posted on social media on Wednesday afternoon, saying half its staff were off sick with Covid.

"There are no guest teachers available so rather than closing the classrooms or the school, we are asking if you are able to keep your child home tomorrow we would appreciate it."

In a post on Thursday, it told parents the school had secured enough teachers for all classes on Friday.

About 35 people work at the school, which has about 260 children on its roll.
