A man has died in New Caledonia after being bitten multiple times by a shark.

The man, though to be about 50, was on a cruise with friends in the south of the archipelago.
The police say he was swimming just metres from the boat when he was attacked by a bull shark.
A spokesperson described it as a savage and sudden attack.
