New Zealand's Marina Erakovic has crashed out in the third round of the Edgbaston Classic in Birmingham, losing to the Italian fifth seed Sara Errani, 7-6 6-4.

Errani went on to lose to France's Aravane Rezai, the fourth seed, also in straight sets, in the quarter-finals while the top seed Li Na of China beat Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 6-4 6-2.

Earlier, second seed Maria Sharapova once again proved too strong for her old foe Sesil Karatantcheva as she reached the semi-finals with a 6-2 6-4 win, setting up a semi-final clash with the USA's Alison Riske, who beat the third seeded Belgian Yanina Wickmayer in three sets.
