Fiji Airways plane makes emergency landing in NZ after engine fire

09:07 am on 5 August 2013

A Fiji Airways aircraft has made an emergency landing at Auckland International Airport this morning after a fire in its right engine.

New Zealand's fire service has confirmed the right engine of the Boeing 737-700 caught fire after take-off en-route to Suva.

The plane, carrying 122 passengers and 6 crew, returned and landed safely in Auckland where emergency services including 14 fire trucks were on hand.

Fiji Airways says the aircraft will now undergo extensive inspections by engineering staff to ensure it can be safely released back into service.

Flights have been delayed at Auckland Airport as a result and Fiji Airways says it is re-booking passengers on subsequent flights from Auckland.
