Niue man banned from owning gun

13:39 pm on 20 May 2011

A Niue man has been banned from owning a gun for three years after pleading guilty to two charges in the local court this week.

Police Chief Mark Chenery says a disturbance happened at Hikutavake on Sunday and the police seized the man's weapons.

Mr Chenery says the police charged him under the Firearms Act and he has been fined by the local court.

"The incident that occurred was a male person fired off a couple of shots with a shotgun. Part of the charges relate to it being within a hundred metres of a residential area and the fact that he was intoxicated while in possession of a firearm."

Hikutavake has been the scene of ongoing violence since the election but Mr Chenery says he hopes tension there will now start to settle.

Police are continuing to investigate the alleged arson of a house belonging to the son of the village's MP on election night.

On the same night, four men, from an adjacent property, were arrested on assault charges and will appear in court next week.
