Up to four men confronted an armed man while going to the aid of an injured shopkeeper at a liquor store in downtown Auckland this afternoon.
Police have described the group as "good samaritans", who managed to disarm the knife-wielding attacker after the attack at the store, at the intersection of Fort and Commerce Streets.
The shopkeeper was taken to Auckland Hospital with head injuries.
Police would like to hear from the Polynesian men, who had left before they arrived at the scene.
A 25-year-old man was arrested and is set to appear in Auckland District Court tomorrow.
