The director of American Samoa's youth and women's affairs department has been sacked by the territory's acting governor.
Jonathan Fanene faces charges of domestic assault, kidnapping, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Mr Fanene is accused of beating his wife and her sister with a pipe and a wooden stick.
The acting governor, Lemanu Peleti Mauga, says he made his decision based on police evidence, including pictures of the injuries Mr Fanene's wife sustained.
Mr Fanene is likely to face other charges of abuse dating back a decade.
