Consultation on cathedral design ends

08:05 am on 4 May 2013

The opportunity for people to vote on which design they prefer for the Anglican cathedral in Christchurch has ended on Friday.

The Anglican Church has held public meetings during the past month to gauge public opinion on three potential options to replace the city's earthquake-damaged Christ Church Cathedral.

Options presented by the Church Property Trustees are restoring the building, replacing it with a timber building in a similar style, or using a more modern design. The church has not said which it prefers.

The Anglican bishop of Christchurch, Victoria Matthews, could not say how many people had cast votes on website set up by the church, but says public opinion will influence the final decision.

Church leaders are meeting in a couple of weeks to discuss the results and the trustees will have the final say on which design is selected.
