French Polynesia population growth slows

The population of French Polynesia has grown marginally, but the birth rate continues to decline.

Latest figures show that at the end of 2019, the territory had 278,400 inhabitants - a 0.4 percent increase on the previous year.

Over the past 20 years, the population increased by 45,000.

Life expectancy has risen to 75.1 years for men and 78.5 for women.

On average, a woman had 1.7 children, down from 2.6 two decades ago.

Over the past 20 years, the population has aged substantially.

Those over 60 have almost doubled and now account for 13.3 percent of the population.

In the same period, the share of those under 15 declined from 31.2 percent to 21.6 percent.
