Sport: PNG women's cricketers still a chance for knockout rounds

14:40 pm on 3 September 2019

The Papua New Guinea women's cricket team remain in contention for a spot in the knockout rounds of the T20 World Cup Qualifier despite a six-run defeat by Bangladesh in Dundee.

Chasing a revised target of 59 to win from eight overs, the Lewas needed 11 runs off the final six balls but fell one maximum short of sending the game to a super over, with top-scorer Tanya Ruma (12 off 13 balls) dismissed with three balls remaining.

Earlier, right-arm off-break Sibona Jimmy led the way with figures of 3 for 10 from three overs as Bangladesh reached 103 for 8 from 16.3 overs before rain forced an early end to the first innings.

PNG and Bangladesh were originally meant to play their Group A match-up on Saturday, but the game was rescheduled after rain intervened.

The Lewas beat hosts Scotland by six wickets on Sunday, reaching their target of 102 with three balls to spare, and must beat the United States in their final round-robin clash on Tuesday if they're to have a shot at advancing to the semi-finals.

Bangladesh lead Group A with two wins while hosts Scotland are second, ahead of PNG on net run-rate, with the USA still chasing their first win.

Thailand and Ireland are already through to the knockout stage after beating the Netherlands and Namibia to set up a top of the table finale in Group B.

The two semi-final winners will qualify for the 2020 ICC Women's T20 World Cup in Australia, which begins in February.
