Injury forces Astle out of second test

13:59 pm on 28 March 2018

Legspinner Todd Astle who played a key role in New Zealand's win over England in the day night cricket test in Auckland will miss the second test starting in Christchurch on Good Friday due to injury.

Astle, 31, suffered a side strain while bowling in the second innings and taking 3-39 including the final wicket in the Black Caps innings and 49 run win at Eden Park.

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson said it was unfortunate time for Astle.

"Through some incredibly hard work, Todd's already overcome some injuries this summer, so for this to happen now is a cruel blow," said Hesson.

"Todd played a major role in helping us win the game at Eden Park, so it's disappointing for Todd and the team that he's forced to the sideline ahead of Friday."

Ish Sodhi, who took career best figures of 12-62 in the most recent round of Plunket Shield, will join the squad as Astle's replacement.
