A man has been taken to Palmerston North Hospital with serious injuries after an incident in the Horowhenua town of Shannon.
Police are not yet revealing the details of the incident but an area has been cordoned off.
There were reports on social media that the man had suffered gunshot injuries.
One person commented on social media saying that he saw a man with blood on his face trying to get cars to stop.
Horowhenua District mayor Bernie Wanden said he understood a man turned up at the Shannon Four Square with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
He said it seemed to be gang related and was confident there was no threat to the public.
