Gisborne District Council said it had had problems heating the 50-metre pool at the Olympic Pool Complex since January, when the supply of woodchips it previously relied on from a local supplier abruptly dried up.

Since then, the council had been relying on a back-up gas boiler to heat the pool, but when that also failed, the entire pool complex had to be closed for a month.

Despite the gas boiler having subsequently been repaired, it was still experiencing stoppages, the cause of which had not been able to be determined.

The council is building a new $46m pool complex, called Kiwa Pools, which is due to open next year.

The new facility will feature a 50m x 20m multi-use pool and will be powered by electricity.
