Springfield votes to keep damaged donut

10:17 am on 7 October 2009

The town of Springfield in Canterbury has voted to try to retain a giant donut despite a recent attempt to burn it down.

The four-metre structure was donated to Springfield two years ago after as a promotion for the release of The Simpson's Movie.

The film is based on an animated television series set in the fictional town of Springfield, USA.

Damage to the structure is irreparable and a resource consent for it ran out recently.

Regardless of these hurdles, the Springfield township committee voted on Tuesday night to do its best to ensure the fun and the status the donut has brought in the past two years can continue.
