A lax approach to road safety in the Cook Islands has prompted calls for reforms on enforcing the wearing of helmets.
A presentation last week at the annual health conference provoked a reaction from the Secretary of Health, Elizabeth Iro, who says there was a lot of discussion about injury prevention.

The current law says people travelling less than 30 kilometres per hour don't have to wear a helmet, but there are concerns that there is little or no enforcing of helmet use for people going at faster speeds.
Ms Iro says some have suggested helmet use should be compulsory for all motorbike and bicycle riders at peak times, like 7pm to 7am, when accidents are more likely.
Following a road death last week, police reminded the public to be vigilant with safety.
