The coroner has opened an inquiry into the death of Auckland teenager Christie Marceau.
Miss Marceau was 18 when she was stabbed by Akshay Anand Chand in 2011 while he was out on bail.
Chand was found not guilty of her murder by reason of insanity and has been detained indefinitely in a special mental health unit.
A Justice Ministry spokesperson said Coroner Garry Evans has opened an inquiry, but no inquest date has been set yet.
Miss Marceau's mother Tracey Marceau says the family is pleased the inquiry is happening and has asked to make submissions when the inquest goes ahead.
She says the inquiry will be a chance to uncover information that didn't come out in court because of the insanity plea.
Tracey Marceau says the family will travel from Australia for the inquest, which is expected to take place next year.
