Zuma re-elected to lead South Africa's ruling party

20:15 pm on 19 December 2012

South Africa's ruling African National Congress has re-elected President Jacob Zuma as party leader.

At a conference in Bloemfontein, Mr Zuma comfortably saw off a challenge by the deputy president, Kgalema Motlanthe.

For deputy president, party members chose Cyril Ramaphosa, a former union leader who is now South Africa's second richest black businessman.

The ANC is widely expected to win the next general election, due in 2014, so Mr Zuma is likely to remain president until 2019.
