Two dead in crash after driver fails to stop for police

An overnight crash in Wellington has left two people dead after the driver of a car failed to stop for police.

Police said the car had been signalled to stop shortly before the crash, but that the vehicle was not pursued when the driver failed to do so.

The car collided with a building on the corner of Jervois Quay and Cable Street at about 2.10am.

Two other occupants of the car are hospital with what policed called non-life threatening injuries.

The Serious Crash Unit has examined the crash scene and enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are under way, police said

The incident is being referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.

Meanwhile, police confirm a person died following a crash involving a single vehicle in Tuakau on Saturday evening.

Emergency services had responded to the crash on Bollard Road, Tuakau at around 7pm.

Other person was seriously injured.

Police also attended at a serious crash on Hamilton's Norton Rd overnight.

Norton Rd was closed between Maeroa Rd and Jolly St and police asked people to avoid the area.
