US government not in a position to hold regular direct talks with Fiji

The United State Government has clarified that it's not in a position to hold regular direct talks with members of Fiji's interim government.

The clarification from the State Department follows claims by Fiji's interim finance minister, Mahendra Chaudhry, that more open and free dialogue will soon be established between the two governments.

Mr Chaudhry is currently in Washington DC attending meetings at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund or IMF.

Following his meeting with Glyn Davis, the principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific affairs, Mr Chaudhry said direct dialogue between his government and American Embassy officials in Suva would start soon.

However in a statement released overnight, Mr Davis says the White House has made it clear that it would not be business as usual with Fiji's interim regime following the coup last December.
