Police say a body was located in the Waikato River on Tuesday and while formal identification processes are still underway, it is believed to be a man reported missing last Saturday.

At 7.45pm that day police were advised that a man had jumped off Pukete Bridge into the river, and could not be found.

Despite extensive searching that night and over subsequent days on the river and along the riverbank, the man was not found.

Fire and Emergency and Land Search and Rescue were among those involved in the search.

The family of the missing man have been notified and police are providing them with support.

The death will be referred to the Coroner.
