The Ministry of Fisheries in Fiji is urging the public to stick to legal size limits to reduce overfishing.

Fish is the main source of protein and livelihood for local families, but stocks are currently low in Fiji.

Researcher Nanise Kuridrani-Tuqiri says there is a lack of management of consumers and fishermen, which has led to excessive exploitation.

Ms Kuridrani-Tuqiri says fisheries regulations can be complex , but she stresses fish stocks must have a chance to replenish themself.

A major reef fish such as grouper has a minimum size limit of 250 millimetres and the snapper's minimum length is 300.
