Powerful quake hits Mexico

20:47 pm on 11 December 2011

A powerful 6.5 magnitude earthquake has shaken Mexico, killing at least two people, knocking out power in parts of the capital and sending people rushing into the streets.

One person was killed after a roof collapsed in the small city of Iguala, while a second died after a rock fell on a small van on the Mexico City-Acapulco highway, officials said.

A magnitude 8.1 earthquake in 1985 killed as many as 10,000 people.

The US Geological Survey says the epicentre was in the southwestern state of Guerrero and was 64 kilometres deep.
