Man remanded in custody after 12-hour standoff in Napier

A 25-year-old man has been remanded in custody after a hostage drama in Napier.

Appearing in Hastings District Court this afternoon on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm, the man was granted interim name suppression.

He was arrested just before 2am today, in what the police have described as a hostage situation involving a woman, after a tense 12-hour standoff in Alexander Avenue, Onekawa.

He will next appear in Napier District Court on 17 July.
