A 12-year-old girl is dead after being hit by a train in the south Auckland suburb of Takanini on Monday.
The girl was fatally struck by a northbound train at a crossing in Taka Street about 2.30pm. Acting Senior Sergeant Dion Bentley said the girl died on impact.
The lights and barrier arms appeared to be operating at the time, Mr Bentley said.
Transdev, which runs the passenger trains for Auckland Transport, said about 2000 passengers were affected by train cancellations, which last for several hours before resuming.
Transdev said staff and customers who witnessed what happened, including the train driver, would be offered counselling. About 25 passengers were on the train.
The matter had been referred to the coroner.
