Fiji's former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase is expected to be released from prison this week.

Qarase was imprisoned last August after being found guilty of abuse of office related charges.

It was alleged Qarase between 1992 to 2000 while employed as a director of Fijian Holdings Limited, Financial Advisor of the Fijian Affairs Board and advisor to the Great Council of Chiefs, in abuse of the authority of his office, did arbitrary acts.

Qarase was sentenced to 12-months imprisonment and will be released after serving seven months.

Meanwhile, Fiji Live says the Corrections Services Commissioner, Lieutenant Colonel Ifereimi Vasu said Qarase has requested that news of his release should not be discussed with the media.

Lieutenant Colonel Vasu says they have respected Qarase's decision.
