Santo unhappy with Air Vanuatu plan to drop service

14:37 pm on 5 January 2010

Reports from Vanuatu say there is a ground swell of discontent in Santo with Air Vanuatu's decision to stop international flights to the island.

The Daily Post says this could prompt several business owners to consider shelving plans to add bungalows to their resorts.

A meeting of those concerned was told that advertising expenses were wasted on a spread featuring Air Vanuatu as the only direct carrier to Santo.

The paper says others spoke of the original encouragement from the tourism organisation, Air Vanuatu and the government asking for more investment in Santo in extra beds and infrastructure based on the promise of direct international flights.

Port Vila has at least six direct flights a week from Australia and Santo one.
