The government's announced it will create a Māori Health Authority as part of its massive overhaul of the health system. Such an agency was a key recommendation in the Waitangi Tribunal's Kaupapa Inquiry report in 2019, which found serious Treaty breaches and failings by the Crown to close the persistent gap between Māori and non-Māori health outcomes.
