12:11 pm on 20 June 2016

Owners of nearly 700 dogs have taken up an Auckland Council amnesty offer aimed at preventing attacks.

Unregistered dogs classified as menacing qualify for the deal, which offers a waiver of fines, free registration, de-sexing, microchipping and a muzzle for $25.

The Auckland-wide amnesty was put in place after several serious attacks, and from 1 July dog control officers will begin seizing unregistered animals.

So far 676 dogs have been signed up by 610 owners.
