Private property sales to be legal in Cuba

07:52 am on 4 November 2011

The buying and selling of private property in Cuba is to be legally permitted for the first time in more than 50 years.

The ban took effect in stages after Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba in 1959.

A law change which takes effect on 10 November, is seen as the most important reform so far in a series of changes introduced by President Raul Castro.

For decades Cubans have been able to exchange property only through complicated barter arrangements or black-market deals.

With the new law, they will be allowed to own a maximum of two properties - the main home and a holiday home.
