Local man takes over Solomons Telekom

10:28 am on 24 October 2008

Solomon Islands monopoly telecommunications provider Solomon Telekom has named the first local to take over as its Chief Executive Officer.

He is Loyley Ngira from Choe Village in Western Province.

Mr Ngira began work in the telecommunications industry with SOLTEL, a joint venture company between the Solomon's Government and Cable and Wireless in 1978.

He gained technical and commercial experience in the broadcasting and telecommunications sectors before taking up the position of Chief Executive Officer.

Mr Ngira replaces Martyn Robinson of England who held the position for 18 years but was forced out of the job following a two-week strike earlier this year by Telekom workers demanding his dismissal.
