Call for unity on solving cycleway issue

Wellington City Council has been urged to show leadership and fix the Island Bay cycleway.

Last week, Island Bay Residents' Association called a truce with the council and cycling advocates, saying it wanted them all to work together on a solution.

The association's president Vicki Greco told councillors today there was no community acceptance for the current design.

Mrs Greco said any consultation would be easier if the council began by getting rid of the route.

"The community has said loud and clear they do not accept the current design," she said.

"Let us, the community, together with others, lead the engagement approach and find a solution. This needs to start now.

"Offer the people of Island Bay a sign of goodwill - paint it out while we consider the future."

The community was ready to get on with the work, she said.
