The New Zealand tennis player Marina Erakovic has pulled off a major upset at the US Open, toppling Russia's former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the opening round in New York.
New Zealand's world number 82 had never made it past the first round in New York, but after losing the first set she settled down against the former world number 2 and finished the match in style, taking the deciding tiebreaker 7 points to 3 against the 20th seed.
She says she fought hard, tried to remain aggressive, and while she could have served better, is happy with her game.
Erakovic's second round opponent will be unseeded, either the Russian Elena Vesnina or Yung-Jan Chan from Taipei.
