A man died in Dunedin last night after police received reports of him being assaulted and run over.
Emergency services were called to Eglinton Road, in the suburb of Mornington, about 7.30pm.
Police say they are treating the death as unexplained.
"Sadly, the man died at the scene," police said, in a statement this morning.
"We understand a group of people were present at the scene prior to this man's death and welcome any information you may have that will help us understand what happened."
Cordons were currently in place with a tent set up on one side of the road.
RNZ saw a single police officer at the scene shortly before 9.30am today.
The reasonably quiet street is flanked by houses on one side and by sports fields and Unity Park on the other.
The park is a popular lookout over the city.
Anyone with information that might assist police was asked to ring 105 and give the event number P051302605.
