Officers received reports of an aggravated robbery in Maich Road in Manuwera shortly after 10.30am.
Police were following a vehicle that was suspected to be involved, when one passenger opened fire.
No police staff were injured, Detective Inspector Karen Bright from Counties Manukau CIB said.
The Eagle helicopter and Armed Offenders Squad were deployed to follow the vehicle, which was spiked in Wiri and then came to a stop in Landscape Road in Papatoetoe.
Detective Inspector Bright said police had recovered a firearm from the vehicle.
