A man has died after being hit by a car in Palmerston North and three others were injured in the same crash, and one person was killed in a crash in Buller.

The driver of the car clipped another vehicle and hit a traffic island before the original car rolled onto the footpath, hitting a male pedestrian, police said.

The man died at the scene.

Stuff has reported that the man was walking home from a nearby pub when he was struck and killed.

"He only lives round the corner so he decided he was just going to walk back home," a bar worker told Stuff. "It's just tragic because he did everything right."

Three people who were in the car that rolled were also hurt. A passenger was seriously injured, and the driver and front passenger had minor or moderate injuries, the police statement said.

The crash happened at about midnight on the Main Street section of State Highway 3, in the suburb of Roslyn.

One person dies in Buller crash

Police said one person was killed in a crash early this morning, north of Charleston in the Buller area.

Emergency services were called to the single vehicle crash on State Highway 6, near Croninville Terrace just after 4:30am.

Only one person was in the vehicle. Police said they died at the scene.

One lane of SH6 is open.

Police said they would continue investigating both crashes.
