A writer and educationalist in Maori arts says the mana of Maori women in film and television is growing.
Hohi Keri Ngapera Kaa was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit at Government House in Wellington on Friday, for services to Maori and art.
She has done extensive work in writing, education, heritage, kapa haka and speech, and has received an award for Women in Film and Television.
Ms Kaa said the way Maori women are portrayed in film and television is improving.
In the early days, she said, there was a focus on macho warriors, but women have provided a contrast to that and proven that they are warriors too and that you don't have to be violent to be a warrior.
