Fiji's electoral officials happy with proposals for international election observers

18:54 pm on 24 January 2006

The chairman of Fiji's Electoral Commission says he would welcome any proposals for international observers to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

The leader of the United People's Party, Mick Beddoes, made the call after alleging that enumerators are registering the minority groups that he represents as indigenous Fijians.

The Electoral Commission chairman, Graham Leung, has told Radio Fiji he has no problems with international observers.

He says any kind of any kind of addition to the elections process that will lend confidence to the poll is to be encouraged.

But Mr Leung says having international observers is not his call but the call of the government of the day.

He has also rejected allegations of widespread irregularities in the voter registration process.

But Mr Leung says Mr Beddoes' complaint will be looked into if it is lodged officially.
