Fire ban lifted in Whangarei district

18:38 pm on 23 February 2009

A fire ban for the Whangarei district has been lifted.

The council says a spell of wet weather in the past week has eased the risk and people are now free to light fires in the open again without a permit.

The fire ban over much of the the Far North will also be relaxed from prohibited to restricted from midnight on Monday, meaning people will now need permits for outdoor fires.

A total fire ban remains in place in the Aupouri-Karikari area and the Kaipara district.
