The Government is putting extra funding into keeping workers safe while rebuilding in Christchurch, including protecting them from exposure to asbestos.
It is promising nearly $11 million over four years towards implementing new safety rules for the rebuild.
Labour Minister Simon Bridges, says the extra funding will help achieve the Government's goal of reducing the workplace death and injury toll by 25% by 2020.
The Government hopes the lessons learned as part of that will be applied to the construction sector nationally.
