A 30-year-old man who was in a serious condition is now stable in hospital after firing shots at police officers in Manawatū last night, police say.
Foxton Police said they got a report about 5.30pm yesterday about a driver and signalled for the man to stop, but he didn't.
Although a pursuit was not initiated, as police made inquiries, they said the driver then came back past one of their cars and fired shots towards an officer.
They said the driver then abandoned his car, forced another motorist from their car, and stole that vehicle.
The car was driven to Feilding where spikes were used to stop it.
It was then driven into a parked police car at speed, while another shot was fired at a police officer.
The driver had to be extracted from the vehicle by Fire and Emergency after which he was taken to Palmerston North hospital in a serious condition.
The 30-year-old is now in custody.
A firearm was recovered from the scene, police said.
Police said there was likely to be a number of serious charges.
No officers or members of the public were injured.
