A large North Canterbury vegetation fire has been extinguished.

The blaze in Swannanoa, which broke out on Saturday afternoon, burnt through an estimated 12 hectares in and around the Waimakariri riverbed near Christchurch.

Final checks of the fire site were carried out on Monday evening and the property has now been handed back to its owners.

The cause of it is being investigated.
