Daur Kove is in Nauru along with the foreign minister of the second Georgian breakaway republic of South Ossetia in a joint quest to broaden international recognition of their Russian-backed entities.

The two ministers are visiting at the invitation of Mr Waqa who two months ago was in Abkhazia.

Last week, Mr Waqa was quoted as saying Nauru would lobby and promote the interests of South Ossetia in the Pacific and he was sure more countries will recognise South Ossetia as an independent country.

Tuvalu recognised the two republics for three years until 2014 when it set up diplomatic ties with Georgia.

Vanuatu also briefly had links with them.

According to Abkhazia's foreign ministry, Mr Daur invited Mr Waqa to return to Abkhazia this year for events marking the 25th anniversary of the end of the war, during which thousands of people died and tens of thousands were displaced.
