Christchurch Hospital is bracing for a birth surge as women go into premature labour brought on by Tuesday's magnitude 6.3 earthquake.

The number of births spiked in Christchurch after the 4 September earthquake and a repeat is expected.

A nurse says she went into work to help out last time because so many women went into labour and it is happening again.

She says she's leaving her devastated house to help out.
